BioFactura’s management team is comprised of individuals with extensive industry leadership, experience and complementary skill sets. Over the past several years, team members have designed, built, validated, and operated multiple biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities and have produced more than a dozen biologic drugs, including several FDA-approved, commercialized products. The team has a proven combination of leadership, drive, and knowledge to strengthen and expand BioFactura. BioFactura’s management team ensures investors and partners delivery of performance and service for success.
Darryl Sampey
President and Chief Executive Officer
Darryl Sampey co-founded BioFactura in 2001 and manages all strategic corporate endeavors of the Company including contract research and development, platform technology programs, and biopharmaceutical product development. Before BioFactura, he led both process development and manufacturing teams at Human Genome Sciences, Inc. (HGS). During his tenure with HGS, Mr. Sampey played key roles in the start-up, commissioning, and validation of the company’s first cGMP manufacturing facility and associated development laboratories. Prior to HGS, Mr. Sampey developed fermentation and product recovery processes for novel vaccines at North American Vaccine, Inc. that have since progressed to internationally-approved vaccines for whooping cough in infants and meningitis in adults. Mr. Sampey graduated first in his class and was awarded a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Magna Cum Laude at the University of Maryland. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Bioengineering at the University of Maryland.
Alex Matschiner
Chief Operating Officer
Alex Matschiner co-founded BioFactura and has served as Vice-President of Operations prior to his appointment as COO in July 2004. Mr. Matschiner has more than 12 years of industry experience in R&D, manufacturing, and facility design. Previously, he served as Senior Manager of Manufacturing Operations at Human Genome Science (HGS). At HGS, Mr. Matschiner led the design and construction of all downstream manufacturing areas in the construction of HGS’s $180 million commercial manufacturing facility. The facility houses twin 20,000-liter bioreactors, which are among the largest in the biopharmaceutical industry. Mr. Matschiner has also served in similar lead positions during the conceptual design, construction, start-up and validation of the microbial and mammalian pilot-production facilities at HGS. After the completion of the facilities, he led the Recovery and Purification manufacturing teams. Prior to his work in manufacturing and engineering, Mr. Matschiner worked in the R&D group at Human Genome Sciences. During that time he developed the manufacturing process for one of HGS’s lead-product candidates. Before joining Human Genome Sciences in 1995, Mr. Matschiner worked at the Center of Marine Biotechnology where he investigated the enzymology of hyperthermophiles. He received his Master of Science degree in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from the University of Iowa.
